I know exactly what you are going through, she probably has arthritis in her old age, I watched my once active thriving intelligent maltese slowly decline, mentally and physically until we lost her last year.  The best thing you can do is talk to your vet to see if there is anything they can do to make her more comfortable in her old age. Maybe something for the pain?  We installed special steps throughout the house so she could get to her favorite places, put her on a special diet...It is hard to watch your baby go through all this, I still haven't replaced "Lambchop", it was a year on Thanksgiving and I am just now getting to the point where I can think about getting a new puppy.  My heart goes out to you!

:Please, if anyone has any ideas, tell me how to deal with my aging matlese. She is 14 years old and it seems as though everything she does causes her pain. Maybe it's dementia? I know she is not going to be around for much longer, but I look at her and want her to be as comfortable as possible. I also look at her and can't imagine my life without her. Anyone else with the same situation?
