I have a 7 year old maltese who I have never in my life heard bark!  Just recently my husband was asleep and I ran to the store, He called to tell me she was barking away when I left, but stopped once she realized he was there.  and I swore he was dreaming! lol The next time I went out, I set up my video camera to see what she did while I was away, and guess what? I was gone ten minutes and she barked the whole time!  To this day she's never barked in the presence of anyone, but if she's alone, I guess she gets noisy!
