Trick Or Treat! We know you're all busy with Halloween, so we'll keep this issue short. In this issue: ========= 1. Maltese FAQ: "Crimpy" Hair?! ~ 2. Website Rework ~ ========= 1. Maltese FAQ: "Crimpy" Hair?! The following question and response is an excerpt from the Maltese FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions--and answers) at our website. Q: My Maltese is in full coat and his hair is "crimpy" in places. How do I get a smooth, silky coat? A: When a Maltese's hair gets wet, and it subsequently dries without certain grooming techniques, the hair will often develop small wavy curls. Fortunately, there are some tricks of the grooming trade that will help to prevent these curls and result in a smooth and silky coat. First, it's important that a Maltese in full length coat be bathed at least weekly, and that they be combed or brushed daily. In the task of achieving a desirable smooth silky coat, the most important aspect is post-bath grooming--specifically during hair drying. It is essential that the hair be combed out (with a steel comb) while it is still wet, and then continuously brushed (with a pin brush) while under a warm air blow dryer until the hair is dry. Admittedly, combing and brushing untreated long wet hair can sometimes be difficult. Also, without the application of good conditioning rinse and/or detangler, the dried coat can be left somewhat "fly-away" and susceptible to static charge. Fortunately, there are some excellent anti-static conditioning rinse and detangler products available, such as Coat Handler(tm), PetSilk(tm), and Unicoat(tm), that when applied make it much easier to comb out the hair and result in very smooth and silky hair. Specifically, you'll want to look at Coat Handler Anti-static Coat Conditioner or PetSilk Conditioning Rinse, PetSilk "Liquid Silk" (a very small amount of Liquid Silk does wonders to create a full, soft and tangle-free coat between baths), and Unicoat Detangler Spray (also useful for between baths grooming). You'll also need a good free-standing blow dryer, such as the Superduck® Pet Hair Dryer. Remember, try to avoid combing or brushing completely dried hair (except at the tail end of a bath grooming)--instead, apply some detangler spray or Liquid Silk beforehand, if possible.
